During this term, we visited an actual site, Sellwood, a park in SE Portland. Our goal was to create a meaningful piece of architecture that would bring the community together. The base of our project was instructed as; to create a building that would be sponsored by an NGO to be built, provide free beverages of our choice within reason, and make a new place of community for PDX that relied on the honor system (ran with tips).

My main driving idea when going into this project was that I wanted the feeling of the building to be as natural as possible, but still relatively interesting. I started with a circular base and it took off from there, giving me the idea to make my building follow the golden ratio. A sequence that happens organically. It was also the reason I decided on a reciprocal roof that is mostly self-supporting and had skylights that wind into a spiral as well. The natural lighting casts a gentle spiral shadow giving the customer or person experiencing the building a natural path to follow while taking a look around. I also thought a lot about "desire paths" when going into this and tried to make a path around the counter that would feel easy and as intended.

When I first began this project I had no idea what to do, so this assignment had lots of experimentation and brainstorms. Originally I had the counter space in the building have a 'figure-eight' formation to try and create a sense of fluidity within. I ended up changing it since it didn't feel functional and took away from the experience of the building. The roofing of the building also took a lot of time and research to figure out how to make it stand.
